New York Rangers head coach Mike Sullivan is back behind the bench after stepping away briefly to take care of what he called a 'family circumstance'.
Mike Sullivan took over as the head coach of the New York Rangers during the summer after he was let go by the Pittsburgh Penguins after nearly 10 years on the job.
But he missed his first game behind the Rangers bench
on Sunday against the Detroit Red Wings, a 2-1 loss by the Rangers, to take care of what he would later call a 'family circumstance'.
He's back with the team and was behind the bench for New York's 3-2 loss to the Vegas Golden Knights on Tuesday.
He chose
not to go into details about the situation, but said that he appreciated the support from GM Chris Drury and owner James Dolan.
I'd rather not get into the details of it, but I appreciate everybody's support. I'm grateful to James Dolan and Chris Drury for their understanding. Obviously, family means everything to all of us. I appreciate everybody's support through a little bit of a trying circumstance. - Mike Sullivan
The Rangers' loss to the Golden Knights was just their second road loss of the year.
Mike Sullivan Is In His First Year Behind The Rangers Bench
The Rangers made a change in leadership behind the bench after last season in which they missed the playoffs just a year after going to the ECF.
They dismissed Peter Laviolette and hired Sullivan, who had just been let go from the divisional foe Pittsburgh Penguins.
Sullivan helped the Penguins win consecutive Stanley Cups in 2016 and 2017 and kept them in contention for years after, but they also made a change after missing the playoffs for three years in a row.
