The Devils landed Connor Hellebuyck on Friday, and Pierre LeBrun says it could be the ultimate play to lure Quinn Hughes to New Jersey.
The New Jersey Devils have their goalie, and now the hockey world is asking what it means for Quinn Hughes.
Connor Hellebuyck was traded by the Winnipeg Jets on Friday, and Pierre LeBrun of The Athletic believes GM Sunny Mehta may have just played a brilliant chess move.
Hughes still hasn't signed an extension with the Minnesota Wild.
LeBrun reports he remains undecided after another check-in this week.
He hasn't told the Wild he'll walk, but he hasn't promised to stay either.
New Jersey has a compelling pitch, since his brothers Jack and Luke already play there.
Playing alongside them has been a family dream, and a Devils team with Hellebuyck in net looks far more like a Cup threat now.
The move stings in Carolina. The Hurricanes felt they had a fair offer on the table for months and stayed interested until the end, only to see him land with a division rival.
Wild face a tough call
Minnesota GM Bill Guerin's best answer may be landing Dylan Larkin from the Detroit Red Wings.
LeBrun says no team has sent Detroit more offers over the past few months than the Wild, but they have struggled to build a package that works after spending big to get Hughes in December.
A Larkin addition would send a loud message to Hughes.
If Hughes still hasn't given an answer closer to the March 1 deadline, Guerin faces a brutal choice.
He can chase a Cup with Hughes and risk losing him next summer, or force a trade with New Jersey first.
Montreal waits on Larkin's list
Montreal still isn't on Larkin's list, but Detroit likely hopes that changes.
The Canadiens have shown they will pay big, as their offers to Toronto for Matthew Knies and Columbus for Kirill Marchenko proved.
Larkin's camp wants things to move faster.
