The Devils were hard in pursuit of Quinn Hughes this season, but now, it appears those leaks have now ruined the internal workings of the franchise.
The New Jersey Devils started 2025/26 red-hot, and given that they have two of the three superstar Quinn brothers in the National Hockey League, it was no surprise that they went hard after the third in trade talks.
Shockingly, however, Hughes was traded to the Minnesota Wild, leaving the Devils with nothing, and now, they've been on a major slide, with their hopes of a Stanley Cup Playoffs run now clearly up in the air.
Hughes trade debacle effects the Devils
On the latest episode of the 32 Thoughts podcast, Elliotte Friedman addressed the Devils and their recent struggles, noting that the failed pursuit of Hughes may have something to do with their locker room issues.
It is very clear to me that the whole Quinn Hughes situation just damaged their internal workings, business got out, NTCs used, things like that and I don't know how you fix that. - Elliotte Friedman
It's unclear if the things happening behind the scenes in Hughes trade talks are to blame for their current situation, but given that the team have now dropped seven of their last nine games, it's clearly played some role in their recent slide.
Ultimately, it made sense for this team to pursue Quinn Hughes, as he could have been a piece to take them over the top in 2025/26 and beyond, but ever since the topic came up, things haven't been the same, and if Elliotte is right, there may be plenty of issues to solve if they want to turn things around this year.
