Per a new report from NHL analyst Pierre LeBrun, the New Jersey Devils are on the verge of trading veteran defenseman Dougie Hamilton despite still having another two years left on his contract.

It's beginning to look more and more like the saga of veteran defenseman Dougie Hamilton with the New Jersey Devils is coming to a close.
Per a new report from NHL analyst Pierre LeBrun, the Devils, who already reportedly tried to trade him to the San Jose Sharks, are getting close to move on from him for good, and has even listed his former team, the Carolina Hurricanes, as a potential spot he could end up.
I think it caught some people off guard that he was right back in the lineup because the impression on Saturday is that he wasn't going to play for a while, but it doesn't change anything. Everyone involved is still focused on finding a trade for Dougie Hamilton as a resolution.

Carolina and Toronto are among the potential fits. Let me stress potential. Of course, he was with the Hurricanes and played well there. But it would really depend in terms of whether Carolina would go down that road and in terms of what New Jersey would take back in exchange. And with the Leafs, I think there's no question they're not taking him at $9 million a year, the Devils would have to retain. So we'll see where it goes. They hope to get this done before the Olympic break. - Pierre LeBrun

So far this year, Hamilton has 13 points (5G, 8A) in 42 games played for the Devils, who are also reportedly trying to move on from forward Ondrej Palat.

Dougie Hamilton Still Has Two Years Left On His Contract

Hamilton, who was taken with the ninth overall pick by the Boston Bruins in the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, has not only played for the Bruins but also the Calgary Flames and Carolina Hurricanes before signing with the Devils in 2021.
He still has another two years beyond this current season with an AAV (average annual value) of $9 million left on his contract. The Devils may need to retain a small portion of that number to make a trade with a potential suitor work.
