Dougie Hamilton appears on the way out of New Jersey, but according to reports, he's not heading to Canada, as he is prepared to block any trade there.
The New Jersey Devils entered the 2025/26 season with Stanley Cup expectations, but following their recent struggles, this may be a team that's looking to shake things up in a big way.
As of right now, the team are still well and truly in the hunt in the Eastern Conference Wild Card race as well as the Metropolitan Division standings, but if they don't change something soon, this season could be a waste.
Dougie Hamilton ready to block a trade to Canada
One move that seems inevitable for this team is a trade of veteran Dougie Hamilton, who was recently informed that when this team is fully healthy, he'll remain a healthy scratch moving forward.
That has led to chatter about his future, with many believing he'd accept a trade to some teams, but according to Elliotte Friedman, that would not involve a deal that sends him back to Canada.
I was asking around...teams that would be interested; you probably subtract some of the teams he's played for; would he be willing to go to Canada, I'm not sure...he's been there done that. - Friedman
After three years in Boston, Hamilton spent three seasons with the Calgary Flames, and given how poorly things ended there, the Toronto native seemingly has no interest in returning to Canada again.
That still leaves plenty of options out there for the Devils to get a deal done, and given how much sense it makes, there's no reason why Hamilton won't be moved ahead of the 2026 trade deadline.
