Lane Hutson had an incredible rookie campaign in 2024/25, but with contract talks ongoing, Elliotte Friedman reveals things are getting emotional in Montreal.
The 2024/25 campaign was a historic one for Lane Hutson, as the young defender won the Calder Cup on the back of scoring 6 goals and 66 points in 82 games played, as he has emerged as a key piece of the team's future.
At 21-years old, most consider him to be the brightest star in the organization, with many expecting him to ink a long-term deal in the near future that will solidify Montreal's young core for years to come.
Canadiens and Hutson 'Taking a Break' on Contract Talks
Unsurprisingly, those extension talks began this off-season, but according to NHL Insider Elliotte Friedman on the latest 32 Thoughts Podcast, they've had to take a break due to things getting too emotional.
This negotiation to me compares to Kirill Kaprizov in one way, and that is that it got really emotional and everybody needed a timeout, because I think this negotiation has gotten very emotional.
He doesn't quite expand on what led to things getting emotional and when talks will start up again, but after both Luke Hughes and Jackson Lacombe signed 8x$9 million deals over the past few weeks, it's safe to say that perhaps Hutson wanted a little more, and deservedly so.
With a core of Nick Suzuki, Cole Caufield, Ivan Demidov, Hutson and a few prospects yet to come, Montreal need to lock in their young blue liner, so while it may not happen now, don't be surprised to see it happen during the regular season at some point.
