Montreal Canadiens demote star rookie Jacob Fowler after tough loss to Sabres

The Montreal Canadiens came into 2025/26 with incredibly high expectations, and on the back of their young core, this is a team that's delivering as they have posted a record of 26-15-7, sitting them in third place in the Atlantic Division.

There are many reasons for their success this year, and while many want to point to the young, thrilling core that bring speed and excitement to their fans, their goaltending has been fantastic once again.

While many believed that Jakub Dobes would be their starter for the season, he's dealt with some injury issues as of late, and as a result, they've turned to another young net minder in Jacob Fowler to carry the load.

In 10 games this season, Fowler has posted a 2.62 GAA and a .902 save percentage, but following a performance against the Buffalo Sabres where he gave up four goals on 26 shots, he has officially been demoted to the American Hockey League.

At just 21-years of age, this was bound to happen sooner or later as Montreal look to go with the Dobes/Montembeault combination in net, but given how he performed in his first NHL stint, we should see him back with the Canadiens before too long.

Ultimately, this is a team with such a bright future, and with two goaltenders under the age of 24 that have shown true promise at the NHL level, they could have success for a long, long time with Dobes/Fowler leading the way.
