After landing in Florida via trade from Buffalo, veteran forward Kyle Okposo is on the verge of cashing in a big check if the team can win the Stanley Cup.
This past summer, veteran forward Kyle Okposo was convinced of returning for his 17th NHL season with the Buffalo Sabres, but he was ultimately moved to the Florida Panthers at the trade deadline. This was a fantastic move for the veteran, who had a bonus clause placed in his contract, as he would pull in an extra $500k if he were to win the Stanley Cup.
Now, he will play in Game Five in Florida against the Oilers with the opportunity of clinching the Stanley Cup Finals, a massive opportunity on it's own. However, with the added bonus, there has to be even more incentive for the 36-year old who has spent 17 seasons chasing the ultimate goal in the NHL.
I wanted to make sure that I gave myself a chance, no matter what,» Okposo said. «If I didn't have that in my contract, I might not have tried to continue it on, to continue to push. It was kind of a reminder, more than anything, that I wanted a chance to win.
I'm not a very selfish person and it was hard to make a decision like that, but I wanted to put it out there.
After spending his first 17 years with the New York Islanders and Buffalo Sabres, Okposo hasn't seen the Stanley Cup Playoffs in a long, long time, but now he's in a great spot to claim NHL glory. In four games thus far in the Stanley Cup Finals, Okposo has contributed two assists in 8:33 minutes of ice time per game, and has been a solid veteran presence on this team.
While winning a Stanley Cup is motivation enough, Okposo clearly has the chance to gain even more value from winning this series, so expect to see a huge celebration from the veteran if they can clinch the Cup this season.
