The Edmonton Oilers are down 3-1 in the Stanley Cup Finals. Despite their struggles to pull out wins they have played well and run into hot goaltending.
Their success has mainly come from the play of their star players Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and Evan Bouchard. Particularly Connor McDavid who last night broke Wayne Gretzky's record for assists in a Stanley Cup Playoff run.
Now a report from NHL insider Frank Servalli has revealed what it will take to keep this group together beyond the 2024-25 season.
With Leon Draisaitl set to become a free agent after the 2024-25 NHL season talks have begun regarding his future. Insider Frank Seravalli confirmed the Edmonton Oilers are committed to keeping all 3 of their stars. He then goes on to say that combined Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl, and Evan Bouchard could eat up 40 million dollars in salary cap space.
With each player locked up long-term the Edmonton Oilers would need to be careful about the contracts they give out to other players. However, Frank Seravalli also says the salary cap should increase by enough that these contracts won't look so restrictive in a couple of years.
With all of these factors in mind the Edmonton Oilers will need to get these deals done sooner rather than later. If they want this core to continue together they need a long term commitment from each of the big 3 this summer.
