The Edmonton Oilers have 51 games of flexibility left with Isaac Howard, and training camp is where they start spending it.

Jason Gregor said on his radio show that Howard is getting a real shot under Mike Babcock, and that if he arrives ready, he may not be going back down.
That framing makes camp the decision point. The collective bargaining agreement says the decision comes later.
Howard signed his first NHL contract at 21, which leaves him waiver exempt for three professional seasons or 80 NHL games, whichever comes first.
He played 29 games as a rookie last season, scoring five points.

The 51-game clock nobody is counting

That leaves 51 to go. Once Howard crosses 80, Edmonton cannot send him to the Bakersfield Condors again without exposing him to the other 31 teams.
A regular in Babcock's lineup gets there somewhere around late January. That is the same stretch of calendar where Stan Bowman does his deadline shopping.
So the shuttle Edmonton ran all of last season stops being available roughly halfway through this one.

Why this audition is really a commitment

That changes what winning a camp job actually means. Handing Howard 51 games is not a look, it is a choice to keep him permanently or move him before the exemption burns off.
At a $965,000 cap hit through 2027-28, he is cheap enough to carry either way. What Edmonton spends here is roster flexibility, not money.
Zach Hyman and Vasily Podkolzin still own wing minutes, and Babcock has never been sentimental about young players.
But the coach who plays Howard hardest is also the one who destroys his own escape hatch fastest.
Bowman built this roster expecting to add in February, and every game Howard plays narrows what he can do with the bottom six once he gets there.
Howard's camp is really a February question, and it gets answered long after the roster is set.
