Mattias Ekholm was expected to be on Team Sweden's Olympic roster, but now, a former Oiler has made it in a bitter selection shock for fans.

The last two seasons have resulted in the Edmonton Oilers in the Stanley Cup Finals, and while they've been led by a handful of stars, this is a roster full of immense talent.
Heading into the selection period for the upcoming 2026 Olympics, many believed they'd have many players representing their nations at the event, but now, that's proven to not be the case at all.
As of right now, captain Connor McDavid is the only player officially on an Olympics roster, and while Leon Draisaitl will represent Germany, it's been a disappointing time for others on this roster.

Mattis Ekholm snubbed in favour of former Oiler

Now, salt has been rubbed in the wounds of the team, as former Edmonton Oiler Philip Broberg has been announced for Team Sweden, with veteran Mattias Ekholm shockingly snubbed.
While Ekholm has never been a big point producer, he's been solid this season, posting 3 goals and 17 points in 41 games played, and given the physicality and two-way game he brings, many expected him to be on this roster.
However, Sweden has plenty of that on their blue line, and with the versatility of Broberg, they believed he would be a much better fit on this roster, and while this won't be taken personally by many Oilers fans, given the way in which Broberg ended up departing the team, it's safe to say that this may hurt some of their fans in a big way.
