With most of the regular season out of the way, former longtime NHL goalie Cory Schneider took his recent appearance on TSN's Overdrive to roast Edmonton Oilers goaltender Stuart Skinner live on air.
Cory Schneider had a long career in the NHL as a goaltender, playing 410 games across 13 years and three teams.
Following seven years with the New Jersey Devils, five years with the Vancouver Canucks, and a single game with the New York Islanders, Schneider officially retired in September 2023 before transitioning into work as an NHL analysis.
Now, over a year into retirement and more than three-quarters way through this season, the NHL retiree has garnered attention for his recent on-air statements about one particular goaltender in the league.
During his latest phone interview on TSN's Overdrive, Schneider was asked about Edmonton Oilers' own Stuart Skinner, he called out the player's inconsistency, pointing out his performance last postseason as a player capable of winning, but very "volatile."
"He's a guy that I've tried to watch and get a beat on, you know. I know he kind of got some heat last year, but like you said, he still got him within a game of the Stanley Cup. I think part of his thing is still, he's still a youngish goalie, is he's a bit volatile, you know? His bad games can be really bad, and his good games are really good. I think you saw in the playoffs where he lost a net to pick her for a stretch but when he on, he's proven he can win the big game, so I think that's what you want out of your goalie."
Schneider detailed what he deemed were Skinner's weaknesses outside of experience, sharing that he believes a major part of his problem is too much movement for his size and a lack of puck-tracking discipline.
"You know I talked about Stolarz and how he's a big man, but he's become more of a technician. I still find Skinner's got a lot of movement: a lot of moving parts for a big goalie, which can be an issue it can create holes it can create creases and gaps for guys to look at and score. So, for me, you know he does play deep at times but then it seems like he's got a lot of movement and action in his game which isn't always the best thing when you're his size so I think the quieter a game he can play, and when he's seeing the pucks well."
Yet, at 6'4" and a current season save percentage of only .896, it might do him and the team well to heed some or all of Cory Schneider's advice.
