Justin Hryckowian's verbal destruction of Tristan Jarry is a calculated strike at the Oilers' broken psyche
Justin Hryckowian is officially a menace, and Pete DeBoer is absolutely loving every single second of it.
The Dallas Stars are riding a massive 14-game point streak. They completely dismantled the Edmonton Oilers in a 7-2 blowout on Thursday night.
But the main story in the hockey world today is not the lopsided scoreboard or the standings. It is the unhinged, targeted trash talk coming from the Stars rookie.
Hryckowian was caught on camera pointing and screaming at the Oilers bench. The clear target of his relentless wrath was struggling goaltender Tristan Jarry.
"They couldn't trade you, they didn't want you."
That was the alleged quote echoing across the ice during a chaotic stoppage in play.
It is a brutal and calculated chirp. Jarry has been a complete disaster since landing in Edmonton via a late December trade.
Over his NHL career, the veteran netminder has seen his fair share of highs and lows. Right now, he is drowning in the deep end with a horrific .855 save percentage.
A Drowning Goaltender With the Edmonton Oilers
Jarry has posted an abysmal 4.17 goals-against average over his first 15 appearances with the Oilers. The team in front of him is talented, but he is actively losing them hockey games.
The Pittsburgh Penguins shipped him out for a reason. Hryckowian knew exactly what he was doing, and he made sure the entire Edmonton roster heard about it.
With 10 goals and 13 assists in 65 games, Hryckowian is not the main source of offensive output for Dallas. But his energy, forechecking, and penalty-drawing ability are undeniably top tier.
He drew four separate penalties against the Oilers alone. He currently sits third on the team with 17 drawn penalties this season.
That agitating, physical style eventually got under the skin of Connor McDavid. The captain completely lost his composure and threw punches at the rookie as the second period expired.
When a depth center makes a perennial MVP candidate snap, he is doing his job perfectly. Solid execution is about knowing your specific role on the ice and maximizing the disruptive impact.
Dallas is an absolute wagon right now. They are getting crisp passing, controlled entries, and relentless defensive pressure from all four of their forward lines.
Edmonton is desperately searching for answers in the crease. Until Jarry finds his game, they are going to keep hearing about it from guys like Hryckowian.
