Simon Edvinsson is drawing real interest from the Canadiens, and David Pagnotta says it goes well beyond the Dylan Larkin chase.

The Montreal Canadiens have spent weeks chasing Dylan Larkin, but a second Detroit Red Wings name has now landed on their radar.
According to David Pagnotta, Montreal has strong interest in defenseman Simon Edvinsson too.
Pagnotta said that as much as the Canadiens have shown significant interest in Larkin, there is also a lot of interest in Edvinsson.
That adds another layer to a Detroit situation that keeps getting messier by the day.
"As much as Montreal...have had significant interest in Dylan Larkin...there's also a lot of interest in Simon Edvinsson."

Larkin has asked for a trade and remains in a holdout.
His 10-team list is made up of American clubs only, and Montreal is not on it.
The Minnesota Wild are believed to be his preferred landing spot.

Why Edvinsson fits Montreal

Edvinsson is a 23-year-old restricted free agent who still needs a contract.
Interim GM Shawn Horcoff reportedly wants to sign him, but the phone keeps ringing.
Boston, Nashville, St. Louis, San Jose and Seattle have all been mentioned as clubs taking a serious look, and San Jose reportedly had an offer turned down.
Montreal could use help on the back end, and a big, skilled defenseman would make a lot of sense.
The catch is price. Detroit is reportedly asking a lot, and the Canadiens are tight against the cap.

What happens next

The Larkin talks are stuck in one spot.
Montreal reportedly believes it has an offer Detroit could accept, but nothing moves until Larkin approves a deal.
Edvinsson's situation has a clock on it, since he needs a contract soon to play this season.
That makes the next few weeks pivotal for Detroit and for any team hoping to swing a deal.
