Chicago Blackhawks veteran forward Pat Maroon announced his retirement during a pre-game interview this afternoon.

Pat Maroon is one of the most well-known players in the NHL. He is very well respected by everyone around the league despite occasionally crossing the line.
He is the exact kind of player you love to have on your team, and love to hate when he's on the other side.
The 36-year-old has had quite the career, winning three Stanley Cups, one with the St. Louis Blues, and two with the Tampa Bay Lightning.
Tonight is his 840th career regular-season game as the Blackhawks visit the Blues.
He has 125 career goals and 195 assists for 320 points as well as another 23 goals and 53 points in 163 playoff games.
But now it is all coming to an end, as he revealed himself ahead of the game this afternoon.
In a pre-game ice-level interview with Darren Pang, Maroon revealed that he is planning on retiring at the end of the season in order to start a new chapter with his family.
"It's tough. Sometimes you have to give up everything you know and everything you've dreamed of your whole life and I just know its time for me, and its time for me and my family to go start a new chapter in our lives. You know, to get to have a special moment tonight, to be in St. Louis and have my family come to town, you know I won a Stanley Cup here. I'm just going to finish this year and every game is going to be my last game. I'm going to play as hard as I can and do everything I can to keep winning hockey. This is all I know Panger, its tough."

There was a time earlier this season when many expected Maroon to be traded to a contender as the Blackhawks are clearly not making the playoffs.
In fact, one NHL insider linked Maroon to his former club in the Tampa Bay Lightning, but clearly that deal never materialized.
That being said, Maroon has accomplished just about everything he set out to when he began his career, so it seems like he won't be too sad about this change in his life.
Change can often be scary, but it seems like he has accepted that and is ready to move on. Good luck in retirement Pat!
