The NHL's Department of Player Safety has been under fire over the past week, and now they've made their first big ruling, a fine for Carolina's Seth Jarvis.
Over the past few days, there has been plenty of controversy surrounding George Parros and the NHL's Department of Player Safety following immense criticism from Connor McDavid, player agent Allan Walsh and fans.
Following the ruling on the Radko Gudas/Auston Matthews play that saw the Maple Leafs captain injured for the remainder of the 2025/26 season, Parros has been under fire, and on Tuesday, he fired back in a scathing defense of his department and the job that they've been doing.
Seth Jarvis hit with a fine for a high-stick
Despite all of that, they've still got a job to do, and on Wednesday, they had to make a ruling on Carolina Hurricanes star forward Seth Jarvis after he high-sticked Columbus' Conor Garland in their latest meeting, resulting in a clear double-minor.
Now, with all of the chatter around the DoPS, they've made their official ruling, handing the young Hurricanes star a $5,000 fine, the maximum allowable under the NHL's CBA for this offence.
Unsurprisingly, plenty of fans in the comments on social media were calling out the DoPS for what many saw as an accidental high-stick, with the majority believing that the double-minor called on the ice was sufficient.
Ultimately, this is a department that's been under fire and will continue to be for quite some time as their decision making has been inconsistent at best, and this latest ruling will do nothing to change their standing in the eyes of fans.
