Latvian forward Rodrigo Abols punches IIHF official in heated argument
During the IIHF World Championship, Latvian forward Rodrigo Abols landed a nasty punch on the official and is likely to be suspended for his actions.
During the third period of today's matchup between Poland and Latvia in the IIHF World Championship, Latvian forward Rodrigo Abols landed a punch on the referee.
Rodrigo Abols gave a jab to the official here. Looks like he apologized after.
Abols would later go onto explain why he punched the ref and shared that he apologized profusely for the incident.
"I thought the [Polish player] was holding onto my shirt. I tried to get free. Unfortunately, there was the official. I apologized a thousand times, and even after the match."

Abols, a 28-year-old forward, is one of Latvia's leaders wearing a letter on his jersey in international tournaments over the the past three years.
The 6'4" centerman was originally a draft pick of the Vancouver Canucks in the 2016 draft but never made the NHL. However, he has developed quite a career in Europe captaining Oreboro HK in the Swedish SHL from 2021-23 and being an alternate captain for Rogle BK this past season.
