Los Angeles Kings forward Kevin Fiala, who is playing for Switzerland in the 2026 Olympics, was hospitalized after a heavy hit from the controversial Tom Wilson.
Even though it was another victory for Team Canada to improve to 2-0 in the Olympics, their win today over Team Switzerland wasn't without controversy thanks to one of the usual suspects.
Washington Capitals forward Tom Wilson, who has been fined and suspended multiple times in his NHL career for controversial hits that have resulted in injuries to opponents, leveled forward Kevin Fiala with a huge hit that left him badly shaken up on the ice.
Fiala needed a stretcher to be removed from the ice, and was eventually hospitalized per the latest information from Team Switzerland's head coach, but there has been no further update.
So far this year with the Kings, Fiala has 40 points (18G, 22A) in 56 games played. It would be a damaging loss for both Switzerland and the Kings if he were forced to miss time because of this injury.
Tom Wilson Has Been Suspended Multiple Times In His NHL Career
Tom Wilson is no stranger to controversy while playing in the NHL for the Washington Capitals.
As of the start of the Olympics, Wilson's most recent suspensions was a six-game ban in March of 2024. Perhaps his most controversial hit was during an exhibition game because of a blindside hit on St. Louis Blues forward Oskar Sunqvist in September of 2018, which resulted in a major 20 game suspension.
But Canada, despite Wilson's multiple controversies, wanted him on their team because of his championship experienced and hard-nosed play.
