Jon Cooper updates Josh Morrissey’s status ahead of quarter finals
Josh Morrissey went down early in Canada's tournament, but now, the Winnipeg Jets star is a possibility of returning for Canada ahead of the quarterfinals.
Team Canada dominated the group stage of the 2026 Olympic Games with one-sided wins over Czechia, Switzerland and France, heading into the knockout stages as the No. 1 seed in the tournament, as many expected them to be heading to Milano Cortina.
This comes as no surprise given the roster has the likes of Sidney Crosby, Connor McDavid, Nathan MacKinnon and Macklin Celebrini, but as of right now, they haven't been 100% healthy.
Josh Morrissey could return soon for Canada
Head Coach Jon Cooper has now confirmed that veteran Brad Marchand will be back in the lineup following two straight games on the sidelines as a healthy scratch, and now he's provided an update on Josh Morrissey, who went down in the teams opening game against Czechia.
According to Cooper, Morrissey is expected to take part in the teams practice on Tuesday, and with their next game set for Wednesday against either Czechia or Denmark, there's genuine belief that he could be back in the lineup for that matchup.
While the defense has been solid thus far, allowing just three goals through this tournament while scoring an impressive 20, but with Morrissey potentially back, that gives them another offensive threat from the blue line.
Ultimately, there's major reason for optimism regardless of Morrissey's status for Team Canada, but if they can get him back in the lineup, the belief is that this team is the favourite for gold heading into the knockout stages of the tournament.
