After Team USA won the gold medal, the family of Johnny Gaudreau, who were in attendance for the historic win, released a touching statement of thanks.
Even though Johnny Gaudreau, who sadly passed away with his brother Matthew in August of 2024, was not with Team USA at the recently completed Olympics, his memory was kept alive in a touching way.
After winning their first gold medal in 46 years in exciting fashion with a thrilling 2-1 OT win over Team Canada last week, several Team USA players held a Gaudreau sweater in tribute and also invited his family members onto the ice to take part in the festivities.
Now, the Gaudreau family has released a touching statement of thanks, saying they initially declined an invitation to attend the Olympics but later changed their minds in honour of their two fallen sons.
When we were first invited to Milan for the Olympics, we said no. It felt like more than we could handle. But we kept thinking about what John and Matty would say if they knew we turned it down. We knew the answer. John loved representing his country.........Thank you to every member of that team for loving John & Matty - and for making sure they were part of something historic. And thank you to everyone at NBCOlympics and USA Hockey for your kindness, your generosity, and for bringing our family to Milan to witness it. You gave us a gift we didn't know we needed.
With love and gratitude,

Johnny Gaudreau Remains A Beloved Figure In Hockey Circles
The shocking and tragic death of Johnny and Matthew Gaudreau, which was made even more heartbreaking considering it happened on the eve of their sister's wedding, was met with an outpouring of grief and sympathy from hockey circles all over the world.
The Columbus Blue Jackets retired Gaudreau's No. 13 sweater number, and multiple tributes were held by them and the Calgary Flames, Gaudreau's original team he played with.
What a great sight it was to see the Team USA players make sure that Gaudreau's family felt included the celebrations of their amazing achievement.
