John Carlson is headed to the Anaheim Ducks, and the Washington Capitals just moved a franchise blue line icon.
Elliotte Friedman reported the deal is done, ending Carlson's long run in D.C.
Carlson, 36, was a 2008 first-round pick, 27th overall, drafted by Washington.
This season he has 10-36-46 in 55 games, still driving offense from the back end.
His cap hit is $8.0M and his contract status is UFA after 2025-26, so Anaheim is buying a high-end right shot for the stretch run.
In exchange, the Capitals will receive a conditional first round pick (in 2026 or 2027), as well as a third round pick in 2027.
John Carlson is an indisputable Capitals legend
John Carlson holds almost every record for Capitals defenseman. Across 17 years and over 1100 games, he is truly a franchise icon.
While his career may end in Anaheim, or somewhere else if he continues his career in free agency this summer, it likely won't be long until Carlson is back at Capital One Arena to see his jersey go up in the rafters.
