Trade emerges for Darnell Nurse as Oilers cannot afford to hold out on him much longer

Darnell Nurse has requested a trade from the Edmonton Oilers, and the market is moving faster than Edmonton's front office expected.
TSN's Darren Dreger confirmed Nurse submitted a list of acceptable destinations to the club a week ago.
Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman added that the 31-year-old has narrowed it to three to five teams, with the Los Angeles Kings and Pittsburgh Penguins among the confirmed options.
Stan Bowman's club says it wants a hockey trade - a real roster player back, not just picks and prospects.
That framing sounds strong on the surface, but the contract market for defensemen in Nurse's situation rarely delivers what the selling team hopes for.
Nurse holds the cards, not Edmonton
Nurse carries a full no-movement clause through July 2027 and a $9.25 million cap hit through 2030.
Edmonton cannot move him without his approval, which means the Oilers are negotiating with one hand tied behind their back.
The return history on contracts like his is not encouraging. One analyst pointed to the Rangers receiving a modest return from Anaheim when moving Jacob Trouba's $8 million deal - and Nurse costs $1.25 million more per year.
Nurse posted just 24 points in 82 games last season - a career low that weakens whatever leverage Edmonton thinks it has at the table.
Why the Edmundson return is the realistic ceiling
The Kings scenario gaining traction - Joel Edmundson at $3.85 million for two more years coming back to Edmonton - isn't a consolation prize.
It is a realistic ceiling given the market dynamics, and Edmonton should recognize that distinction quickly.
The Oilers get a left-shot veteran with size and experience, shed serious cap pressure, and keep their blue line functional while Bowman's coaching search remains unresolved.
Holding out for a bigger return risks Nurse staying put entirely. The Oilers cannot afford that heading into Connor McDavid's final two contract years.
