Evander Kane spent Thursday trading insults with an Oilers and Sportsnet columnist. He also spent it unsigned.
The exchange began after the Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee voted 8-5 on August 6 to hold Anthony Fauci in contempt of Congress.
Kane posted criticism of pandemic-era vaccine messaging.
Sportsnet senior columnist Mark Spector replied that it was a selfish take, and Kane fired back with a reference to a locker-room confrontation.
The timing is the story, not the insults
Kane turned 35 on August 2, and his four-year, $20.5 million contract expired when the 2025-26 season ended.
He remains on the NHL's unrestricted free agent list more than five weeks into the open market, one of the few recognizable names still sitting there.
His season in Vancouver produced 13 goals and 18 assists in 71 games, sixth in Canucks scoring, alongside a minus-20.
Nearly every outlet covering his market has landed on the same forecast: a professional tryout in September.
Why a tryout punishes noise more than a contract does
A signed deal protects a player from a week like this one. A tryout does not.
Tryout invitations are discretionary, unpaid, and handed out by general managers choosing between several interchangeable veterans at identical cost, which is zero.

When the price is identical, the tiebreaker becomes which veteran creates the fewest distractions in a room a new head coach is still building.
Kane's 21-game suspension in 2021 for submitting a fake vaccination card cost him roughly $1.68 million and his standing in San Jose.
He has now reopened that exact file, publicly, in the four-week window where quiet is the only currency he has left.
