Detroit lands 6-foot-6 forward Sutter Muzzatti from Nashville for future considerations.
They signed him to a two-year entry-level deal just before an NCAA free agency deadline.
The Red Wings quietly won a small trade battle this week, adding forward Sutter Muzzatti from the Nashville Predators in exchange for future considerations.
Detroit turned right around and locked him into a two-year entry-level contract, giving the organization another young body to throw into the prospect mix heading into training camp.
Muzzatti is not a small addition either.
At 6-foot-6 and 241 pounds, the Okemos, Michigan native just wrapped a strong season at Notre Dame, putting up 32 points in 37 games after transferring in from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.
He was originally a fifth round pick by Nashville back in 2023, but that draft tie only lasts so long in today's NHL.
Why Nashville had to make a move
That is really the story here. Every August, a wave of NCAA draft picks who never signed become unrestricted free agents, and this year's list included names like Cruz Lucius in Pittsburgh and Muzzatti in Nashville.
Rather than watch him walk for nothing once that deadline hit, the Predators flipped him to Detroit for a token asset and let the Red Wings do the signing.
Where he fits in Detroit
For the Red Wings, this is low risk depth building.
A player with Muzzatti's size and offensive touch gives Grand Rapids another option and adds to a pipeline already stocked with names like Kienan Draper.
Nothing here changes the outlook for the NHL roster this season, but it is the kind of value add that quietly stacks up organizational depth over time, and it cost Detroit almost nothing to get it done.
