Morgan Rielly is done letting speculation define his summer. With trade rumors swirling around the Toronto Maple Leafs defenseman for much of the offseason, Rielly made his stance unmistakable, telling reporters he has no interest in leaving the only NHL organization he has ever known.
Despite all of the trade talk, Rielly believes that the offseason has actually been a "great" one.
It's been a great off-season. I think with some early talks about my future, and then coming home from representing Canada at the World Championship and just kind of refocusing, I've just been in a good place.
Rielly went on to say that his training has been exceptional, and he is feeling confident heading into what could be a bounce-back season for himself and the Leafs organization.
My training has been really good, so I'm feeling really confident. I feel nervous. I feel excited, motivated. I just try not to take being a Leaf for granted. This is a great market to play in, a great place to live. Like I said, this is home now. To be a part of this team means a lot to me.
A Season of Uncertainty
Rielly's comments arrive after months of trade chatter, fueled by reports that his camp had submitted a list of teams he would accept a deal to.
GM John Chayka has already reshaped much of Toronto's roster this summer, but Rielly's contract situation and full no-movement clause have limited how much control the front office actually has.
There was uncertainty for sure. But I don't think I'm the only guy who has experienced that, and it's not my first time experiencing that. This has always been the place that I want to play. This is home now.
Leafs Faithful Get Their Answer
For a fanbase that has watched Rielly's name linked to nearly every rumor cycle since last season, his words offer clarity heading into training camp.
Selected fifth overall in 2012, Rielly remains one of the most tenured Maple Leafs on the roster, and his renewed focus suggests he is preparing to be part of Toronto's next chapter rather than its past.
