Former Oilers prospect Matvei Petrov has signed a two-year, two-way contract with Spartak Moscow that runs through May 2028.

Matvei Petrov is officially staying in Russia.
The winger, who spent the summer trying to prove himself on a tryout basis, has now put pen to paper on a full two-year deal with Spartak Moscow that will keep him with the club through May 31, 2028.
The move comes after Petrov spent recent weeks on a professional tryout with the team, a stretch that clearly convinced Spartak's front office he was worth locking up long term.

How he got here

Petrov's path to Spartak has been a winding one.
Edmonton selected him in the sixth round, 180th overall, back in the 2021 draft, and he spent parts of the last three seasons grinding through the AHL with the Bakersfield Condors.
The offense that made him such a dangerous scorer in junior with the North Bay Battalion never quite translated at the pro level, and this past summer the Oilers opted not to give him a qualifying offer, making him a free agent.
That opened the door for a return home, and it did not take long for him to find a new address in the KHL.

What comes next

Now 23, Petrov gets a fresh start in a league where he has already shown flashes of the offensive touch that once made him a name to watch in Edmonton's system.
The two-way structure of the deal suggests Spartak still wants some flexibility, but the length shows real commitment to seeing what he can become in a bigger role.
For a player who never quite found his footing in North America, this is a chance to rebuild his game and his value on a stage where he has already proven he can produce.
