The Vancouver Canucks have reportedly re-engaged in trade talks for Minnesota Wild's 60-point center Marco Rossi, a league source told RG's James Murphy.
The discussions have been quiet for weeks after the Wild didn't receive the type of offers that they were hoping for.
Marco Rossi Involved in New Trade Talks With the Vancouver Canucks
Wild GM Bill Guerin admitted recently that there were "no real updates" on talks with Rossi or impending UFA superstar
Kirill Kaprizov. Meaningful negotiations haven't occurred since June, and the clock is running out to reach a deal.
Minnesota doesn't want to deal Rossi, but his desire for a long-term, big-money deal makes it complicated, especially with the Wild seeking an immediate top-six forward in return.
That would leave Seattle as the more logical suitor.
Jared McCann has been cited as a potential centerpiece, which more directly addresses Minnesota's needs.
The 29-year-old has flourished in Seattle since the expansion draft, netting 61 points last season while playing center and wing. Jared McCann is signed through 2027, which provides Minnesota with short-term stability if they were to trade Rossi.
In Seattle's eyes, dealing McCann for Rossi would better align their forward group with their long-term playoff window.
Rossi, nearly six years younger, is only just entering his prime and could be locked up through the team's rise as the salary cap grows.
On the other hand, Vancouver's return does not look as appealing.
Filip Chytil is not as valuable as McCann, particularly with his injury problems.
For the time being, the market is quiet, but Rossi's case will be one to monitor closely as training camp approaches.
