Bruce Cassidy and Craig Berube have turned Toronto's coaching search into a leverage test, not a routine vacancy.

Berube is out. Toronto fired him on May 13, 2026, and did not name a replacement.
The Maple Leafs are no longer watching Cassidy from the outside.
They are one of the jobs that can actually change the board.
Edmonton is also open after Kris Knoblauch was fired on May 14, 2026, with no replacement named.
That puts two high-pressure Canadian markets in the same lane, and Vegas still holds the gate.
The post shows Cassidy's market being controlled before teams even get to the interview stage.
Re Golden Knights: "I have heard they are adamant they were not letting Edmonton or LA talk to Bruce Cassidy, I don't know about Toronto."

- Elliotte Friedman

Toronto's opening is now real

Friedman's point changes the read: Vegas was not letting Edmonton or Los Angeles talk to Cassidy, while Toronto remained less clear.
That is the crack Toronto has to test.
Cassidy is not just a recognizable name. He is a Stanley Cup coach with a structure-first bench style and enough authority to walk into a tense room.
Toronto needs that kind of weight after a 32-36-14 season that ended with Berube gone.
Edmonton can sell Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.
Los Angeles can sell a cleaner reset.
Toronto can sell pressure, resources, and a fan base that turns every coaching decision into a referendum.
That is why this is not just a Cassidy rumor.
It is a front-office stress test for the Maple Leafs.
If Vegas keeps blocking Edmonton, Toronto's path gets cleaner without Toronto having to say much.
That is how a quiet coaching search can suddenly become the loudest story in the league.
