Montreal Canadiens reportedly set to trade Sean Farrell to the Anaheim Ducks

The number that matters isn't his goal total - it's that he has no contract at all.

Farrell is a restricted free agent.

The Montreal Canadiens submitted him a qualifying offer in June, alongside seven other players, preserving his rights without committing a dollar of cap space.

The report came from PuckEmpire, who called it minor news.

That framing is understandable given Farrell's six career National Hockey League games, all back in 2022-23.

So the Anaheim Ducks would not be trading for a winger. They would be trading for a negotiation.

That is a meaningfully different transaction, and it changes what a fair return looks like.

Farrell's raw output barely moved across two American Hockey League seasons, but the shape of it flipped completely.

In 2024-25 he scored 24 goals with 20 assists. Last season he posted 17 goals and 36 assists in 72 games, finishing second on the Laval Rocket in assists and third in points.

That is not a scorer having a down year. That is an organization moving a player from finisher to feeder.

Montreal, with Nick Suzuki at 101 points and Cole Caufield at 51 goals, does not need another distributor waiting in Laval.

The Ducks finished 43-33-6 for 92 points and reached the playoffs, so this is not a lottery team taking a flyer.

Their leading goal scorer was Cutter Gauthier at 41. Their leading assist man was defenseman Jackson LaCombe at 48.

A team whose primary playmaker plays the blue line has a specific hole. General manager Pat Verbeek can test a fix without spending a cap dollar.

If Farrell never signs, Anaheim loses whatever small piece it sent and moves on.

That asymmetry is why rights trades keep multiplying every July, and why the boring ones reward a closer read.
