Bruins and Predators make multi-player trade nearly a week after the deadline
The Boston Bruins added size to their system Thursday, with head coach Marco Sturm welcoming forward Navrin Mutter to the mix in a minor-league swap.
General Manager Don Sweeney sent Dalton Bancroft and Massimo Rizzo to the Nashville Predators to finalize the two-for-one exchange.
This specific transaction arrives nearly a week after the official NHL trade deadline passed. That strict timing dictates these bodies are exclusively minor-league depth pieces, ineligible for the Stanley Cup playoffs.
They are meant to shore up the locker room and provide insurance for the Calder Cup playoff push down on the farm.
Mutter brings a highly physical 6-foot-3, 213-pound frame directly to the Providence Bruins.
He logged 27 games with the Milwaukee Admirals this season, registering a single assist while aggressively throwing his weight around the ice.
AHL Roster Shuffle for the Bruins and Predators
Over his AHL career, Mutter has suited up for 149 contests, chipping in four goals and 16 assists for 20 total points.
He is certainly not known for his offensive game, but his pure grit provides a distinct element the Boston organization felt was lacking.
Heading back to the Predators system is Bancroft, a 25-year-old who managed just one goal and one assist across 34 appearances in Providence this winter.
At 6-foot-2 and 212 pounds, Bancroft matched Mutter in pure size but completely struggled to carve out a permanent role with crisp passing or steady execution.
Rizzo, the second asset leaving the Bruins organization, spent the vast majority of his campaign grinding away with the ECHL's Reading Royals.
The 5-foot-11 forward actually tallied an impressive 22 points in 29 ECHL games, but he hit the ice for just one solitary AHL matchup for Providence this entire season.
Boston successfully clears two minor-league contracts off the books, effectively condensing their prospect pool to open up future roster flexibility.
Nashville takes a cheap flyer on Rizzo's playmaking upside to help their own farm club generate chances.
Meanwhile, Sturm and the Bruins get a heavy-hitting banger to clear out the blue line and physically protect their skilled young prospects in Providence.
