The reason Robert Thomas' trade to Buffalo fell through is revealed by Elliotte Friedman

One of the most talked about players at last week's trade deadline was St. Louis Blues forward Robert Thomas, who was not dealt after all and was never asked to waive his no movement clause.

But because of the reported high asking price for Thomas, he is still with the Blues.

NHL analyst Elliotte Friedman is now revealing that the Buffalo Sabres were in on the Thomas sweepstakes, but that GM Jarmo Kekalainen did not want to include Josh Norris in the package he would have sent back to the Blues in return, which would have allegedly included "four significant pieces".

The Sabres did acquire Luke Schenn and Logan Stanley from the floundering Winnipeg Jets, and they now lead the Atlantic thanks to the absolute heater they've been on since December.

The Sabres were rumoured to be close to acquiring defenseman Colton Parayko from the Blues, but the erroneous report from analyst Frank Seravalli that Parayko waived his no movement clause proved incorrect.

Parayko didn't waive his no movement clause, and like Thomas, he remained with the Blues even though he was later linked to both the Anaheim Ducks and the Los Angeles Kings.

Regardless, the Sabres are on track to make the playoffs for the first time since 2011.
