Now that Alexander Ovechkin has beat the all-time NHL goals record, the Canucks are under fire for immediately offering his signed jerseys for sale online.
The Washington Capitals captain, 39-year-old
Ovechkin, scored his 895th goal of his career on Sunday to shatter the record held by
Wayne Gretzky for decades.
Ovechkin broke the record in New York in front of the Islanders while Gretzky was sitting in the stands. Despite never taking place on home ice, the record-breaking achievement still vibrates throughout Washington.
On weekdays from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., the Ovi Shop inside Capital One Arena will now sell souvenir "895" merchandise in the guise of T-shirts, caps, and pucks to patrons wishing for some trinket of ice hockey heritage. The parties continue during Fan Appreciation Week, concluding this weekend.
The Capitals have planned an in-store tribute Thursday evening at the home game, giveaways, in-store offers, watch parties, and even Baby Caps packages for babies born in hospitals within the area. All of this makes perfect sense since it is his team he plays for after all.
The Canucks are shockingly selling signed Ovechkin jerseys
However,
the Vancouver Canucks, a team he obviously doesn't play for, are catching heat after putting up an auction-style sale of signed Ovechkin jerseys for bid, which has people up in arms on the web.
Others have called it a greedy money grab by the team, making money off something that has nothing to do with their heritage.
Fans are scratching their heads on it, and others question whether or not the league does, in fact, operate on a double standard when it comes to what can be merchandised.
Short of that, Ovechkin's name rests atop the NHL's all-time scoring list, and Capitals fans are making the moment what it truly is: legendary.
