Vancouver Canucks Facing Harsh Ultimatum With Quinn Hughes Sooner Than Expected
The Vancouver Canucks find themselves in a tough situation with their captain Quinn Hughes approaching free agency.
The Vancouver Canucks have had more than their fair share of drama this season.
From the JT Miller trade and the fiasco that led up to it to missing the playoffs and the
treatment of young players, the organization seems to be at wits end.
Now, with the club all but eliminated from the playoffs, it is time to start looking towards the future.
The team has a lot of questions to answer this summer, and they already have one bug decision to make with
Brock Boeser, whom the team elected to keep at the trade deadline despite a seller's market.
Boeser will become an unrestricted free agent on July 1st. But he is far from their biggest concern.
Rather, that would be captain Quinn Hughes. Hughes has just two years remaining on his contract after this one and if things don't turn around quickly, he could potentially walk in free agency.
Canucks army writer Stephan Roget summarizes the team's situation succinctly.
"Hughes contract, which carries an AAV of $7.85 million, covers this season and two more, the 2025/26 and 2026/27 campaigns. After that, he's eligible to become an unrestricted free agent.
So, if the 'window' is actually limited to the amount of time that the Canucks can guarantee they'll have Hughes under contract, then that window is only truly open for the next two years."
Considering everything Hughes has had to deal with in his time with the Canucks so far, its safe to say he may take testing free agency very seriously.
Buckle up Canucks fans as the next two years could be extremely volatile for the club.
