Alex Ovechkin Makes Surprising Request to Ilya Sorokin After Record-Breaking Goal
New York Islanders goaltender Ilya Sorokin had to make a strange concession to Alex Ovechkin today after he surrendered career goal number 895 to the legend.
He had a perfect opportunity to do so with the empty net late in the game, but apparently he didn't want to break the record with an empty netter.
This was taken as a classy move by the great eight, as many fans appreciated that he didn't want to do it the cheap way.
But perhaps there was another reason why he chose to go this route.
After today's game against the Islanders ended, Ovechkin met with fellow Russian Ilya Sorokin, whom he beat for the record breaking goal.
Apparently, he asked his countryman to give him the stick he was using in the game as a trophy, and Sorokin gladly obliged, getting to meet Wayne Gretzky in the process as the three of them posed for a picture with the goal stick after the game.
Luckily, Sorokin didn't appear to be bitter about the exchange.
Notably, the goal was the first time in four games Ovechkin had ever managed to get a goal against Sorokin.
Ovechkin even gave him a special shoutout during his speech after he scored the goal.
Now it is just a matter of how many goals Ovechkin can score.
With one more season under contract with the Capitals, he should easily pass the 900 mark, but how far can he push the record? After all, each goal will make it just a little bit harder for someone else to come along and break it.
