Sportsnet reveals its Saturday and Monday night hockey plans for 2026-27 and a major change is in store

Hockey season is almost back, and Sportsnet just gave fans a real reason to circle their calendars.

The network confirmed that Saturday Night Hockey will officially kick off on October 3, bringing back the familiar faces of Ron MacLean, Kevin Bieksa, Elliotte Friedman and Colby Armstrong to anchor the weekend broadcast.

It is the same crew that has carried the Saturday night desk through plenty of dramatic moments over the past year, and their return signals that Sportsnet is sticking with continuity rather than shaking things up heading into a fresh campaign.

That familiarity should be welcome news for viewers who have grown attached to the chemistry between Friedman's insider knowledge and Bieksa's blunt commentary, paired with MacLean's decades of hosting experience and Armstrong's analysis from his playing days.

Two days later, Monday Night Hockey makes its own comeback on October 5, though this time with a notable change.

David Amber returns as host alongside Luke Gazdic and newcomer Justin Williams, but the broadcast will no longer be available on traditional Sportsnet channels.

Instead, it moves exclusively to Sportsnet+, continuing the streaming service's push to become a bigger part of how Canadians watch NHL games during the week.

The shift adds another piece to an increasingly complex broadcast puzzle for hockey fans across the country, who already have to juggle multiple platforms depending on the night and the matchup.

Whether the exclusive streaming move for Monday nights pays off in engagement remains to be seen, but it fits the broader trend of leagues and networks pushing premium content behind subscription walls.

With training camps opening soon, these broadcast confirmations are one more sign the 2026-27 season is right around the corner.
