Former Rangers star Ron Duguay has died at 69 after a battle with cancer. The Sudbury native was a first-round pick in 1977 and later an MSG analyst.
The hockey world lost a true original.
Ron Duguay, the flashy former New York Rangers forward who became one of the most recognizable faces in the franchise's history, has died at 69 after a battle with cancer.
A Sudbury kid who became a New York star
Duguay grew up in Sudbury, Ontario, and the Rangers took him 13th overall in the 1977 draft.
He jumped straight to the NHL and scored 20 goals as a rookie.
Not bad for a 20-year-old. His best season came in 1981-82, when he lit the lamp 40 times, a career high.
He spent eight of his 12 NHL seasons in New York across two stints, also suiting up for the Red Wings, Penguins and Kings.
When it was all said and done, he had 274 goals, 346 assists and 620 points.
His 164 goals still rank 25th in Rangers history.
Duguay also represented Canada at the 1981 Canada Cup, a proud moment on a resume full of them.
More than a player in New York
Duguay was never just a hockey player.
With his long curly hair and nights out at Studio 54, he fit right into the disco era in New York, and fans adored him for it.
After retiring, he stayed close to the team as an analyst on MSG Networks Rangers telecasts until 2018, and he remained a loud supporter of the club on social media.
He even laced up again for the Rangers in the alumni game at the 2012 Winter Classic.
Duguay's family shared that he was diagnosed with Stage 4 colon cancer, and he kept fighting while treatment continued.
Our thoughts are with his loved ones, his former teammates and every Rangers fan feeling this loss today.
Rest in peace, Ron Duguay.
