NHL insider Larry Brooks calls out the Department of Player Safety
The NHL DoPS is notorious for being inconsistent and just recently Larry Brooks of the NY Post called them out for not protecting their players, specifically defenseman Erik Gustafsson.
Last week the Florida Panthers and the New York Rangers faced off in a bout between two of the top teams in the NHL. During the game, Sam Reinhart, a 50-goal scorer, laid this hit on Erik Gustafsson.
Brutal elbow by Reinhart on Gustafsson. ... He was very slow to the bench.
After the hit was made, NY Post journalist Larry Brooks called out George Parros and the NHL DoPS for their double standard.
"I guess Erik Gustafsson isn't important enough for George Parros and the NHL Department of Player Safety to protect." - Larry Brooks
It certainly is a bad look for the NHL DoPS and Parros to routinely protect star players more than other players. The argument against a suspension in this situation as it looked as if it was unintentional by Reinhart because he was falling down.
Whether this should have been a suspension or not, the fact of the matter is that Reinhart hurt Gustafsson and the NHL DoPS and Parros did nothing to protect him after the fact.
