On Thursday night, the Toronto Maple Leafs and Florida Panthers continued their best-of-seven series, with the Panthers taking a 2-0 series lead.
During the game, Maple Leafs rookie Matthew Knies was slammed to the ice by Panthers forward Sam Bennett, causing him to leave the game. Later, Bennett cross-checked Michael Bunting. The Leafs were hoping for a suspension to be handed down to Bennett for both incidents.
However, earlier today, the NHL Department of Player Safety only issued a $5,000 fine to Bennett for the cross-check on Bunting, which is the maximum allowed under the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA).
This decision has drawn criticism from many, including Leafs fans, who accuse head of the NHL Department of Player Safety, George Parros, of being too lenient and inconsistent with his rulings.
Parros has previously handed down suspensions for similar incidents, including a two-game suspension to Auston Matthews last season. Therefore, the lack of punishment handed down to Bennett is definitely puzzling.
