Veteran defenceman Jordie Benn announced his retirement from professional hockey in a conversation with CHEK News' Paul Haysom.
Before heading overseas to Sweden, Jordie Benn played the 2022-23 NHL season as a depth defenseman for the Toronto Maple Leafs. He scored two points in 12 games. Additionally, he had six points in 23 regular-season games for their AHL affiliate, the Toronto Marlies, adding three assists in the playoffs as the Marlies made a run.
While he has played for a number of clubs throughout his career, he's perhaps best remembered for his six seasons with the Dallas Stars, where he played with his little brother Jamie, who is now captain of the Stars.
Jordie Benn entered the NHL as an undrafted player, working his way up through Dallas' ECHL and AHL affiliates. After making his debut in 2011-12, he earned a full-time spot with the Stars during the lockout-shortened 2012-13 season.
After Dallas, he went to the Montreal Canadiens, playing parts of three seasons there. He then signed with the Vancouver Canucks in 2019, before being traded to the Winnipeg Jets at the 2021 trade deadline. From there, Jordie Benn played a season with the Minnesota Wild before finishing out his career with the Maple Leafs.
In all, Jordie Benn took part in 607 NHL games over 12 seasons, recording 26 goals, 111 assists, and 137 points. He added four assists in 23 playoff games in his career.
Enjoy your retirement Jordie!
