The family of the late Johnny Gaudreau, who sadly lost his life along with his brother Matthew in August of 2024, has made a beautiful statement before the Olympics.
The Winter Olympics are officially underway, and it will be the first time in 10 years that the NHL is sending players to compete.
Unfortunately, one player who would have been on Team USA is no longer with us. Former Calgary Flames and Columbus Blue Jackets forward Johnny Gaudreau lost his life, along with his brother Matthew, after being run down by an alleged drunken driver while they were bicycling in August of 2024.
Making matters even more tragic was that it was the night before their sister's wedding.
The Gaudreau family has released a statement about Johnny's desire to have represented his country in the Olympics:
As the Olympics are set to begin, our family is filled with both pride and heartache knowing how much this moment meant to John. Representing Team USA at the Olympics was one of his greatest dreams.
In that final summer, John was training harder than ever, with his dad, pushing himself to be in the best shape of his life. He was determined to earn his spot on that Olympic roster.
While it breaks our hearts that John won’t be there to live out that dream, we know he will be so very present with Team USA and all of his close friends competing throughout these games…moments like these remind us of the dreams they held and the impact they made on everyone who knew them. John loved this game and loved representing his country. - Gaudreau Family

Johnny Gaudreau Would Have Represented Team USA
Had it not been for the tragic passing of Johnny Gaudreau, he would not only have represented Team USA in this year's Olympics, but he would have also been on the 4 Nations Faceoff roster last February.
Upon his and Matthew's passing, the hockey world came forward with multiple tributes for the fallen brothers.
