Detroit forward receives the maximum fine for dirty play vs the Toronto Maple Leafs
Saturday night's game between the Original Six
Atlantic Division rivals Toronto Maple Leafs and Detroit Red Wings was an action-packed matchup.
Unfortunately, this morning, fans learned that an incident from last night's game led to further consequences for a player.
Indeed, the NHL's Department of Player Safety decided to hand out a $2,148.44 fine to Jonatan Berggren for a dirty cross-check he landed on Leafs'
Connor Dewar. in the game.
Here's the official statement from the DoPS:
Berggren went near Dewar after a whistle and the Leafs forward tried to hit him in a reverse hit motion.
The Red Wings player lost his temper and retaliated with a much bigger strike. He cross-checked him on the head and they both fell on the ice as a scrum emerged.
Watch the whole scene in the video below:
Dewar, who was on the other side of the hit, signed a one-year deal valued at $1.18 million with the Leafs last summer. He only scored an assist this season, limited to 15 games due to an injury.
Many fans shared their opinions of Berggren's hit on X in what turned out to be a heated debate.
Some suggested that the Detroit Red Wings player should've been suspended two games for what he did and others believe that if Berggren had been with the Leafs, he'd have been suspended.
