Quinn Hughes mourns a loss, where his family's hockey story began

She was 83, and she is where the hockey in his family actually starts.

The Minnesota Wild defenseman posted a photo of the two of them to his Instagram Story a day later, captioned with a heart, a dove and two words.

Weinberg died following a recent illness, according to her obituary, which called kindness and quiet strength the foundation of her life.

Her family was her greatest joy.

The game entered this family through her daughter, not through the Hughes surname.

Ellen Weinberg-Hughes captained New Hampshire and won silver with the United States at the 1992 women's world championship. She was named to that tournament's all-star team, one of six players honored.

She played defense, the same position Quinn and youngest brother Luke play now. Jim Hughes built a career coaching and running player development, but the elite playing pedigree here is maternal.

In February, Weinberg was in the stands in Italy when Jack Hughes scored the overtime winner against Canada for the first American men's Olympic gold since 1980. Quinn was named the tournament's top defenseman.

Ellen worked those same Games as a development consultant with USA Hockey's women's program, which also won gold in Milan.

Three generations of her line were attached to medals in a single tournament.

Speaking to NBC 5 Dallas-Fort Worth after the men's final, Weinberg said she was as proud of her grandsons as people as she was as players. She was preceded in death by her husband, Warren.

Quinn is entering the final year of his six-year, $47.1 million contract while extension talks continue with Bill Guerin.
