Mathew Barzal to the Edmonton Oilers is trending again, and the contract details behind it do not line up.

The post driving it came from a fan account, not a tier-one insider.
PuckPedia has the New York Islanders centre signed through 2030-31 at a $9.15 million cap hit, which is five more seasons, not four. That single year changes the entire question.
Barzal, 29, finished last season with 72 points in 81 games, 19 goals and 53 assists. He led the Islanders in scoring.

The term is the real obstacle, not the fit

Connor McDavid's two-year extension begins in 2026-27 and expires after 2027-28. Barzal's contract runs three full seasons past that date.
So Edmonton would be committing $9.15 million through 2031 to a complementary forward.
The superstar he would complement is signed only through 2028.
That term is usually framed as a cost. It is really a bet on what the Oilers look like after McDavid's deal expires.

Stan Bowman has already answered this

At Mike Babcock's introduction in June, Bowman was asked whether the Oilers are on the clock with McDavid's extension starting. He said he has been asked that since his first day and that nothing changes.
That is the tell. A five-year commitment only makes sense for a general manager who refuses to treat 2028 as an expiry date.
The cap makes it academic for now. PuckPedia projects Edmonton at roughly $4.7 million in space for 2026-27 with 23 players already signed.
Barzal also carries a 22-team no-trade list, leaving nine approved destinations. That list has never been made public, so nobody outside his camp knows whether Edmonton is on it.
The interesting question was never whether Barzal would look good in orange.
It is whether Bowman is building for McDavid's last two years or for the three that follow.
