At the beginning of the season, Toronto Maple Leafs head coach Sheldon Keefe talked about the possibility of putting Mitch Marner on defence for a few shifts during the season. After seeing how successful Cale Makar is putting up offensive numbers from the point, Keefe things that Marner has the same craftiness as Makar and could do the same.
Well, last night against the New Jersey Devils, Marner played one shift on defence and that was enough for Keefe to take him off.
While in an offensive situation, putting Marner on the point and allowing them to put Matthews, Tavares and Nylander upfront could be useful, but if they ever intend on playing Marner a regular shift on defence, it could end up being disastrous.
