The Edmonton Oilers have been on the verge of a deep playoff run for years now, but beyond their top stars, the team just doesn't seem to have the depth for a big run.
Sure, beyond Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl, the team still have names like Zach Hyman and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins, but unfortunately, the proven veteran names needed in the biggest moments just aren't there.
Now, it is being reported that a 1,000 game NHL veteran will be getting a PTO with the Oilers this off-season, and while he likely won't crack the top-six, he has the ability to be a key veteran influence on this team.
According to that report, the Oilers are closing in on a PTO with veteran Sam Gagner, who was originally drafted by Edmonton way back in 2007 before playing nine years with the team.
In 1,015 games in the NHL, Gagner has posted 192 goals and 519 points, and contributed 8 goals and 14 assists a year ago for Winnipeg, so if he gets his shot, he could be a sneaky good pickup for them in 2023-24.
