Chris Kreider has revealed the team he wants to play for next

Chris Kreider's days in the Tri-State area may officially be over, and Montreal might be the next chapter.

The Anaheim Ducks placed the veteran winger on waivers for a mutual contract termination, clearing cap space and setting Kreider up to hit the open market with full freedom to choose his next home.

According to NHL insider Arthur Staple, a Rangers return does not appear to be in the cards, with Buffalo and Montreal standing out as the most realistic landing spots.

The Montreal connection is not new. Kreider reportedly approached Canadiens players during a game a couple of years ago and made his interest in joining the team known.

He has close ties to the organization too, having trained with head coach Martin St. Louis and having been signed years ago by current Canadiens general manager Jeff Gorton.

Kreider also knows Montreal's training staff well, another factor that could tip the scales if he reaches free agency.

Still, the fit is not without baggage.

Kreider is remembered in Montreal for his collision with Carey Price during the 2014 Eastern Conference Final, an incident that ended Price's postseason and still gets replayed by Habs fans every spring.

Whether that history fades quickly enough for a smooth welcome remains to be seen.

On the ice, Kreider posted 22 goals and 50 points in 75 games with Anaheim last season, showing he can still produce in a top six role.

He is finishing the final year of a deal with a $6.5 million cap hit, and once his contract is terminated he can sign wherever he wants without a team giving up any assets.

For a Canadiens team hunting a proven scorer to pair with its young core, that combination could be tough to pass up.
