A March clip of Connor Hellebuyck defending his wife from White House visit backlash is resurfacing as his Jets trade request drags into September.

An old clip of Connor Hellebuyck is making the rounds again, and the timing is stirring up fresh conversation about his rocky relationship with Winnipeg.
Back in March, the goaltender opened up about the criticism his wife Andrea faced after he and his Team USA teammates visited the White House following their Olympic gold medal win.
He said the backlash aimed at her was completely unfair, pointing out that she had done nothing wrong beyond simply supporting him.

Old comments taking on new meaning

That interview didn't get much traction outside of hockey circles back then, but with Hellebuyck now publicly seeking a trade out of Winnipeg, fans are connecting dots that may or may not actually be there.
The March clip has trended online this week.
"Just not fair."

Hellebuyck confirmed his trade request in late August, and it wasn't framed around the White House situation at all.
He's cited the Jets' playoff struggles and doubts about the roster's ability to compete, saying bluntly that most of the league doesn't view Winnipeg the way he does.

Where things stand with a trade

As of this week, Winnipeg still hasn't found a deal it likes.
The Buffalo Sabres, Carolina Hurricanes and Utah Mammoth have all been floated as possible destinations, though talks with Buffalo reportedly collapsed just hours before the 2026 draft.
With training camp opening September 17, there's a real chance the $8.5 million netminder starts the year still wearing a Jets sweater, whether or not that old clip has anything to do with it.
