It feels like the NHL was between a rock and a hard place on this one, and it has finally made a decision. According to Elliotte Friedman of Sportsnet, specialty jerseys will no longer be worn by any NHL teams during warm-ups before a game.
"From NHL Board of Governors: teams will not wear specialty jerseys in warmups next season. - Elliotte Friedman, Sportsnet
What This Means
These means all jerseys, such as Pride Night or Armed Forces recognition nights, will not be an option at all for players to wear on the ice. It does not, however, mean that NHL teams can't still profit from these special initiatives.
"Pride nights aren't being scrapped + teams can still design specialty jerseys to sell, but they won't be a part of warmups. Just feels like a cop out to avoid getting bad press for backwards individual decisions."
While this applies to all specialty night the NHL holds, it seems clear it was sparked by a handful of NHL players refusing to wear Pride jersey during warm-ups, usually citing religious and/or personal reasons.
