Surprisingly, Jake Guentzel has been the talk of much trade speculation this season, and now we may officially know why.
According to NHL Insider Frank Seravalli, the two sides began talking an extension, only for the veteran forward to ultimately turn down their intriguing offer.
Reportedly, the deal offered by Pittsburgh was in the range of $8.5 million AAV over six years, and as Seravalli noted, that wasn't enough term or money for the 29-year old.
With his extension running out this summer, it now makes sense as to why there have been reports of a trade incoming, but it appears the team are ready to talk terms on an extension once more.
In 499 games thus far in his career, Guentzel has tallied an impressive 219 goals and 463 points playing alongside Sidney Crosby and Evgeni Malkin, so he may be worth more than $8.5 million, but now we wait and see whether or not the team is ready to give that to him.
