The Brady Tkachuk trade wasn't a one-off blockbuster. It was a price-setter.

On Sunday, the Ottawa Senators sent their captain to the Florida Panthers for the ninth and 25th overall picks in the 2026 NHL Draft, a conditional first-rounder in 2029, and a second-round pick in 2027.
Tkachuk, 26, has two years left on his contract at $8.205 million per season. He posted 59 points in 60 games before Ottawa was swept by the Carolina Hurricanes in the first round.
Now the league is watching what happens next.
David Pagnotta says at least two more deals at a comparable level are coming before the week is out.
"On the Brady Tkachuk level, we're probably looking at least two more deals this week."

That lines up with what Ottawa is already doing - The Fourth Period reports the Senators are pushing hard to acquire Dallas Stars restricted free agent Jason Robertson.

Why this resets the whole market

Tkachuk's no-trade clause limited his destinations to four teams: Florida, Vegas, Carolina, and Minnesota.
That restriction drove the price up and set a public benchmark.
Two top-ten picks plus future assets is now the established cost for a productive, controllable forward with term remaining.
GMs sitting on similar situations just received a market rate they cannot ignore.

Ottawa's next move is the real story

The Senators now hold three first-round picks at this week's draft. Dallas, meanwhile, has roughly $10.4 million in cap space while Robertson is seeking north of $12 million annually.
Ottawa can offer those picks or go the offer sheet route. The Senators didn't gut their roster - they built a war chest.
The Tkachuk era in Ottawa is over. The spending has already started.
